A comforting and easy breakfast recipe that transforms the classic apple crumble into a hearty morning meal, featuring warm cinnamon-spiced apples under a crunchy, buttery crumble topping.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground allspice
  • 2 tablespoons lemon juice
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/2 cup rolled oats
  • 1/2 cup packed light brown sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) cold unsalted butter, cut into small pieces
  • 1/4 cup chopped pecans or walnuts (optional)
  • Vanilla ice cream or whipped cream (optional, for serving)
  • Maple syrup (optional, for serving)

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. In a large bowl, gently toss the sliced apples with granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, allspice, and lemon juice.
  3. Gently stir in the small pieces of butter.
  4. Pour the apple mixture into a greased 9×13 inch baking dish or individual ramekins.
  5. In a separate large bowl, combine the flour, rolled oats, brown sugar, cinnamon, and salt.
  6. Cut in the cold butter using a pastry blender or your fingers until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs. Work quickly.
  7. Stir in the chopped pecans or walnuts if using.
  8. Sprinkle the crumble topping evenly over the apple filling.
  9. Bake for 45-55 minutes, or until the topping is golden brown and the apples are tender and bubbling. If the topping browns too quickly, loosely cover the dish with foil for the last 15-20 minutes.
  10. Let the crumble cool slightly before serving warm.

Notes

  • Ovens vary, so adjust baking time as needed.
  • For a crispier topping, use slightly less butter in the crumble.
  • For a moister topping, you can add a tablespoon or two of milk or apple juice to the crumble mixture.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days and reheated gently.
  • Variations include adding other spices like cardamom or ginger, different nuts, or dried fruits like cranberries or raisins to the apple filling.
