Perfect for any occasion, these sliders are easy to prepare and a crowd-pleaser for vegans and meat-eaters alike.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 (20 oz) cans young green jackfruit in water or brine
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil
  • 1 small yellow onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika
  • ½ teaspoon chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon cumin
  • ¼ teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 cup vegan BBQ sauce
  • Slider buns
  • Coleslaw (optional)
  • Pickles or sliced red onion (optional)
  • Fresh cilantro for garnish (optional)

Instructions

  1. Drain, rinse, and shred the jackfruit, removing any tough cores or seeds.
  2. Heat olive oil in a skillet over medium heat. Add diced onion and sauté until soft, about 4-5 minutes. Add minced garlic and cook for another 30 seconds until fragrant.
  3. Stir in the shredded jackfruit, smoked paprika, chili powder, cumin, and black pepper. Mix well to coat the jackfruit evenly with the spices.
  4. Pour in the vegan BBQ sauce and stir to combine. Let the mixture simmer for 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the jackfruit is tender and well-coated.
  5. Toast slider buns if desired. Assemble the sliders by filling the buns with the BBQ jackfruit mixture.
  6. Top with coleslaw, pickles, or red onion, and garnish with fresh cilantro if using. Serve immediately.

Notes

  • Ensure you use young green jackfruit packed in water or brine, not ripe jackfruit in syrup.
  • For crispier jackfruit edges, cook uncovered for a few extra minutes or bake at 400°F (200°C) for 10 minutes after simmering.
  • A vinegar-based coleslaw provides a nice contrast to the sweet BBQ sauce.
  • Adjust spice levels by adding more chili powder or a dash of hot sauce to the BBQ jackfruit mixture.
