Irresistible Copycat In-N-Out Animal Style Fries You Can Make at Home Tonight

  • 3 large Russet potatoes
  • Vegetable oil (for frying)
  • Salt, to taste
  • For the Secret Sauce:
  • ½ cup mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons ketchup
  • 1 tablespoon yellow mustard
  • 2 teaspoons sweet pickle relish
  • 1 teaspoon white vinegar
  • ¼ teaspoon garlic powder
  • For the Toppings:
  • 1 medium yellow onion, finely chopped
  • 1 tablespoon butter or oil
  • 4 slices American cheese

Instructions

  1. Wash, peel, and cut potatoes into ¼-inch sticks. Soak in cold water for 30 minutes, then drain and dry thoroughly.
  2. Heat butter in a skillet over medium-low heat. Cook onions for 20–25 minutes until soft and golden brown.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together mayonnaise, ketchup, mustard, relish, vinegar, and garlic powder. Refrigerate until ready to use.
  4. Heat oil to 350°F (175°C). Fry potatoes in batches for 3–4 minutes until golden and crispy. Drain and salt immediately.
  5. Arrange fries on a serving plate. Top with cheese slices and melt under a broiler if needed. Add caramelized onions and drizzle generously with secret sauce.
  6. Serve immediately while hot and crispy.
