This Festive Peppermint Christmas Float is a vibrant, creamy, and wonderfully minty beverage. It offers a delightful spin on a classic float, perfect for holiday gatherings. The recipe combines sweet, creamy vanilla with refreshing mint.

Ingredients

  • High-Quality Vanilla Bean Ice Cream: 2 quarts (15 oz per serving, totaling 15 oz for 8-12 servings)
  • Peppermint Stick Ice Cream: 1 quart (optional, but highly recommended)
  • Clear Lemon-Lime Soda or Ginger Ale: 4-6 (12-ounce) cans, chilled (totaling 1.5 liters)
  • Peppermint Candies or Candy Canes: Approximately 1 cup, crushed (about 10-12 regular-sized candy canes)
  • Heavy Whipping Cream: 1 pint (2 cups)
  • Powdered Sugar: 2-3 tablespoons
  • Pure Vanilla Extract: 1 teaspoon
  • Maraschino Cherries: 1 jar (about 10-15 cherries), drained
  • Small Candy Canes or Peppermint Sticks: 8-12 pieces, for garnishing
  • Red and Green Sprinkles: (Optional)
  • Tall Glasses or Sundae Dishes: About 8-12 individual serving glasses

Instructions

  1. Chill your lemon-lime soda or ginger ale and serving glasses for at least a few hours, ideally overnight. Let the vanilla ice cream and peppermint stick ice cream soften for 5-10 minutes before scooping.
  2. Crush 1 cup of peppermint candies or candy canes. Place them in a sturdy, resealable plastic bag and use a rolling pin to crush them into a mix of fine dust and small crunchy bits.
  3. Prepare the homemade whipped cream. In a large, chilled mixing bowl, pour 1 pint (2 cups) of heavy whipping cream. Whip on medium-high speed until soft peaks form. Gradually add 2-3 tablespoons of powdered sugar and 1 teaspoon of pure vanilla extract. Continue whipping until firm peaks form. Refrigerate until assembly.
  4. Create a festive rim on your serving glasses. Moisten the rim of each glass with water or a small candy cane. Dip the moistened rim into the crushed peppermint candies, rotating to ensure an even coating.
  5. Assemble the Festive Peppermint Christmas Float. Place 2-3 generous scoops of high-quality vanilla bean ice cream into each prepared glass. If using, add one scoop of peppermint stick ice cream on top of the vanilla.
  6. Pour the soda with finesse. Gently tilt each glass to about a 45-degree angle. Slowly pour the chilled lemon-lime soda or ginger ale down the side of the glass, aiming for the ice cream, until the foam reaches just below the rim.
  7. Immediately sprinkle a generous pinch of the remaining crushed peppermint candies onto the foam of each float for a peppermint crunch.
  8. Crown each Festive Peppermint Christmas Float with a generous swirl of your homemade whipped cream.
  9. Add a pop of color with cherries. Place 1-2 drained maraschino cherries on top of the whipped cream.
  10. Garnish with a signature candy cane. Hook a small candy cane or peppermint stick over the rim of each glass.
  11. For a final flourish, optionally sprinkle red and green sprinkles over the whipped cream and cherries.
  12. Serve your magnificent Festive Peppermint Christmas Floats immediately with a long spoon and a straw.

Notes

  • For the creamiest float, ensure all liquid components are thoroughly chilled.
  • A mix of fine dust and small crunchy bits of peppermint provides the best texture.
  • Homemade whipped cream elevates the flavor significantly.
  • Pouring soda slowly down the side of the glass minimizes fizz and creates a creamy foam.
  • Serve immediately to enjoy the best taste and texture of your Festive Peppermint Christmas Float.
  • Consider using dairy-free ice cream or sugar-free sodas for dietary restrictions.
  • A splash of peppermint schnapps or vanilla-flavored vodka can be added for an adult version.
