A quick and easy ground beef and cabbage stir-fry with a savory-sweet sauce, perfect for a weeknight meal.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 lb ground beef
  • 1 large onion, chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 green bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 red bell pepper, chopped
  • 1 small head of cabbage (about 1.5 lbs), thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup beef broth
  • 1/4 cup soy sauce
  • 2 tablespoons brown sugar
  • 1 tablespoon cornstarch
  • 1 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes (optional)
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • Salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste
  • Green onions, chopped (for garnish)
  • Sesame seeds (for garnish)

Instructions

  1. Heat 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil in a large wok or skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and cook, breaking it up with a spoon, until browned. Drain off any excess grease. Remove the beef from the wok and set aside.
  2. Add the remaining 1 tablespoon of vegetable oil to the wok. Add the chopped onion and cook until softened, about 3-5 minutes.
  3. Add the minced garlic and bell peppers to the wok and cook for another 2-3 minutes, until slightly softened.
  4. Add the thinly sliced cabbage to the wok and stir-fry for about 5-7 minutes, until it begins to wilt but still retains some crispness.
  5. In a small bowl, whisk together the beef broth, soy sauce, brown sugar, cornstarch, sesame oil, ground ginger, and red pepper flakes (if using).
  6. Pour the sauce into the wok with the beef and vegetables. Stir everything together to coat evenly.
  7. Bring the mixture to a simmer and cook for 2-3 minutes, or until the sauce has thickened and the vegetables are cooked through. Stir frequently.
  8. Season with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste.
  9. Remove from heat and let rest for a minute or two before serving.
  10. Garnish with chopped green onions and sesame seeds.

Notes

  • Serve hot over steamed rice or noodles.
  • Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days.
  • For a more flavorful stir-fry, marinate the ground beef in a mixture of soy sauce, ginger, and garlic for at least 30 minutes before cooking.
  • Feel free to add other vegetables like carrots, mushrooms, or broccoli.
  • Adjust the amount of red pepper flakes or brown sugar to your preference.
